Costa Rica Guanacaste Weather

Costa Rica has two major seasons:  Green and Dry. The green season is the time of year when the Pacific Gold coast weather changes from a perfect Southern California dry climate to one that is very similar to Hawaii. Afternoon or evening showers bring back all the lush tropical foliage and the country is green from May until after the New Year’s holiday. Rainfall is heaviest in October, and it is the one month to avoid, if you are looking for a sunny tropical vacation.

The Green Season experience in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, is truly amazing.  Some scientists claim Costa Rica has over 1,000 micro-climates.  Planning you visits in advance will help you make the most effective use of travel budgets, accommodations, transportation, items to pack, and most importantly – your time in Costa Rica!

Northern Pacific: Located in Guanacaste, this is dry and hot in the dry season and wetter and warm in the green season.  Near the coast you will enjoy the evening breezes developed when the sea and land temperatures adjust to the sunset at different rates.  The Northern Pacific area is a favorite for beach-lovers.

There are beautiful sun shiny mornings followed by showers in the afternoon. The pattern of showers can be variable and we may experience periodic days where it rains from sunrise to sunset, and/or a few days of continuous rain. At the same time it can also be dry for several days, too. Traditionally in July we have the Costa Rican equivalent to an "Indian summer" in Costa Rica we can it the "veranillo de San Juan" means Saint Johns little summer. This generally takes place around the second or third week of July.

The best time of year for you to come to Costa Rica, and Guanacaste, depends on what you want to do while you're here. Travel in the green season, means that you must bring your rain gear and be prepared to use it with a smile. However, crowds are usually greatly reduced, professional naturalist guides are more readily available, and you will have opportunities to take advantage of observing some very special natural occurrences such as Sea Turtle nesting.

Guanacaste's beaches, full of sun and activity, offer all types of outdoor activities, including surfing, kayaking, swimming, diving, snorkeling and horseback riding. Some of these beaches are true tourist centers, like Tamarindo, Langosta and Potrero, and seem to be made just for sports and sun lovers.
